Lagna Calculator
In Vedic astrology, your Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your moment of birth. Jyotish reads it as the most birth-time-sensitive of the three core indicators, and the one that shapes your outer personality, body, and life path. Enter your birth details to find yours.
Your Ascendant changes every ~2 hours. Birth time must be accurate for a correct result.

What is the Lagna?
The Lagna, also called the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology it is the most time-sensitive point in the whole chart, changing sign roughly every two hours as the Earth turns. Where the Sun shows soul purpose and the Moon shows emotional life, the Lagna shows how you actually move through the world: the body, the personality others read first, and the shape your life path tends to take.
The Lagna does something no other point does. It sets the entire house framework of the chart. The rising sign becomes the first house, and every other planet is then placed in a house relative to it. This is why Jyotish treats the Lagna as foundational rather than secondary: change the Lagna and you change the meaning of every planet at once.
A Lagna describes orientation, not destiny. It points to natural tendencies in how you present, decide, and engage, leaving plenty of room for the choices you make with that material. Read it as a starting posture you can work with deliberately, not a fixed verdict.
How the calculation works
From your birth date, exact time, and location, the tropical Ascendant is computed: the degree of the season-anchored zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at that instant, which depends on both the local sidereal time and the latitude of the birthplace.
The Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard Vedic offset, is then subtracted to convert that degree to the sidereal zodiac. The 360-degree wheel is split into twelve 30-degree rashis starting from Mesha at 0 degrees, and the slice holding your sidereal Ascendant is your Lagna.
Worked example
Suppose the tropical Ascendant at your birth moment computes to 95 degrees. The Lahiri ayanamsa in the modern era is about 24 degrees, so the sidereal Ascendant is 95 minus 24, which is 71 degrees. Dividing by 30 gives 2.36, and the whole number is slice index 2. Counting from Mesha at index 0, slice 2 is Mithuna (Gemini), so this is a Gemini Lagna. Shift the birth time by ninety minutes and the Ascendant would often cross into the next sign entirely, which is why exact time matters here more than anywhere else in the chart.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the Lagna require exact birth time?
The Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, so a birth time that is off by ninety minutes will frequently land it in the wrong sign entirely. Because the Lagna also defines the house structure of the whole chart, an inaccurate time does not shift one detail; it changes the house placement, and therefore the interpretation, of every planet at once. An accurate recorded birth time is the single most important input here.
What is the difference between the Lagna and the Moon Sign?
The Lagna is outer and the Moon Sign is inner. The Lagna is the personality you bring to the world, how others first read you, and the shape your life takes day to day. The Moon Sign is your emotional weather, what you feel privately while you act. Someone can present as direct and energetic through the Lagna while being quietly sensitive through the Moon; both are true at the same time.
What does the Lagna reveal about a person?
The Lagna points to physical constitution and appearance, the instinctive style of personality others meet first, the natural approach to action and decisions, and the overall trajectory the life tends to take. Because it anchors the house system, it also shapes which areas of life, such as career, relationships, or health, receive the chart's emphasis. It is best read as orientation and tendency rather than fixed prediction.
The Lagna is one of three indicators Vedic astrology reads first. Pair it with the Moon Sign Calculator for the inner emotional half of the picture. The Nakshatra Calculator adds the fine-grained lunar mansion that sits inside the Moon Sign. And the Dasha Calculator shows which planetary period is currently activating the chart your Lagna anchors.

The Lagna in the Vedic trinity
Western astrology talks most about the Sun sign. Vedic astrology has always read three signs first: the Sun, the Moon, and the Lagna. The Sun shows what you are doing in the world at the deepest level, your soul purpose. The Moon shows what you are feeling while you do it, the texture of your inner life. The Lagna shows how you actually move through the world: the body, the personality others first read, the shape your life takes day to day. All three are true at the same time, and a complete Vedic reading reconciles them.
The Lagna is also what determines the entire house structure of the chart. Every other planet's house position is calculated relative to the Lagna, which is why an inaccurate birth time does not just shift one sign - it shifts the meaning of every planet in the chart at once. Birth time matters here more than anywhere else in Jyotish.
