Vedic astrology, known as Jyotish (the science of light), is one of the six Vedangas - the limbs of the Vedas. Unlike Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac fixed to the seasons, Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac aligned to the actual positions of constellations in the sky. The difference, called the ayanamsa, is currently approximately 23-24 degrees, meaning your Vedic sun sign is often different from your Western one. Jyotish places particular emphasis on the Moon sign (Rashi) and the rising sign (Lagna) over the Sun sign, reflecting its view that the Moon governs the mind and the Lagna governs the body and overall life direction. The system uses nine planets (Navagrahas): Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Planetary periods (Dashas) are one of Jyotish's most distinctive features - a 120-year cycle of planetary rulership that describes which planet's energy is active at any given period of life. The tools in this category cover the core pillars of a Vedic chart reading: your Nakshatra (birth star), Lagna (ascendant), Dasha timeline, planetary Yogas, Panchang (Vedic almanac), and compatibility analysis. Together they form a complete picture of your Jyotish blueprint.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (aligned to actual star positions) while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (aligned to the seasons). This produces a roughly 23-degree difference in planetary positions. Vedic astrology also emphasizes the Moon sign and rising sign over the Sun sign, and uses a unique system of planetary periods (Dashas) not found in Western practice.

Do I need my exact birth time for Vedic astrology?

Birth time is important for calculating the Lagna (ascendant), which changes sign approximately every two hours. The Nakshatra, Moon sign, and Dasha timeline require birth date and approximate time. For Panchang and Muhurta, the date is sufficient. Exact birth time produces the most accurate full chart.

What is a Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac into equal segments of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. The Moon's position at birth determines your birth Nakshatra. Each Nakshatra has its own deity, symbol, ruling planet, and psychological qualities. It describes the texture of your mind and instinctive nature in finer detail than the Moon sign alone.

What is a Dasha period?

A Dasha is a planetary period in the Vimshottari system, a 120-year cycle divided among the nine Vedic planets. Each planet rules a specific number of years (the Sun rules 6 years, the Moon 10, Saturn 19, and so on). The active Dasha planet colors the themes, opportunities, and challenges of that life period. Knowing your current Dasha is one of the most practical tools in Jyotish.
