What is Gematria?

Gematria is the practice of assigning numerical values to letters, then using the totals of words and phrases to find correspondence and meaning between them. Words that share a value are understood to share a hidden thread, regardless of what they appear to mean on the surface.

Its roots lie in Jewish mysticism, where Kabbalists applied it to the Hebrew text of the Torah to draw out layers of meaning beyond the literal reading. A well-known example is the Hebrew word for life, Chai, which totals 18, which is why gifts in Jewish tradition are often given in multiples of 18.

English Gematria carries the same principle into the Latin alphabet. The most common form, English Ordinal, simply numbers the letters in sequence: A is 1, B is 2, and so on through Z at 26. The value of a word is the sum of those letter values, with spaces and punctuation ignored.

It is worth holding this lightly. There is no single official English system, and different mappings produce different totals for the same word, which is why Gematria is an interpretive practice rather than a measurement. Used that way, as a lens for reflecting on names and words rather than as proof of anything, it can be a genuinely engaging way to explore language and personal meaning.

How the calculation works

This calculator supports three systems. English Ordinal numbers the alphabet one to twenty-six. Hebrew maps each English letter to the traditional numeric value of its Hebrew counterpart. Simple English assigns multiples of six, so A is 6, B is 12, up to Z at 156. In every system the value of a word is the straight sum of its letter values, with no further numerological reduction applied.

word value = sum of each letter value (spaces and punctuation ignored)

Because each system uses a different mapping, the same word returns different totals. Many practitioners run a name across all three and look for repeated numbers or numbers they find personally meaningful.

Worked example: the name "GRACE" in English Ordinal

  • G = 7, R = 18, A = 1, C = 3, E = 5
  • Sum: 7 + 18 + 1 + 3 + 5 = 34
  • English Ordinal value of GRACE = 34
  • In Simple English the same word would total 34 x 6 = 204

English Ordinal

Rule: A=1, B=2 ... Z=26

Best for: Most common, intuitive starting point

Hebrew (English letters)

Rule: Traditional Hebrew values mapped to Latin letters

Best for: Closest to the Kabbalistic source

Simple English

Rule: A=6, B=12 ... Z=156 (multiples of 6)

Best for: Used in some esoteric traditions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Gematria and numerology?

Numerology usually works from numbers you already have, most often a birth date or the numbers in a name, and reduces them to a single digit to describe character or timing. Gematria works in the other direction: it converts the letters of a word or phrase into a total and then looks for words that share that total. Numerology asks what your number means; Gematria asks which words are numerically connected. They overlap in spirit but use different methods.

Are there different Gematria systems?

Yes, and this is central to the practice. This tool offers English Ordinal (A=1 to Z=26), a Hebrew mapping that applies traditional Hebrew letter values to English letters, and Simple English which uses multiples of six. Each rests on a different tradition, and the same word will produce a different total in each. There is no single correct system; practitioners often compare results across systems rather than treating any one as definitive.

How do I interpret a Gematria result?

Treat the number as a prompt, not a verdict. Look for other words or names that share the same total, notice numbers that recur across the systems, and consider what those connections mean in the context of your own life. Gematria is most rewarding as a reflective exercise that draws your attention to language and pattern, rather than as a system that predicts events or fixes meaning.
