Jaimini Karaka Calculator
Your birth chart assigns a ruling planet to each area of life - not by tradition, but by mathematics.
The Chara Karakas are the variable significators of Jaimini astrology - seven offices that rule the major themes of life: soul purpose, career, courage, mother, creativity, conflict, and spouse. Unlike the fixed Parashari significators, Jaimini assigns each office dynamically, based on how far each planet has travelled into its sidereal sign at the moment of your birth. The result is a soul-fingerprint as specific to you as your nakshatra, and one classical commentators regarded as the deepest layer of Vedic interpretation.
Karaka assignments depend on degree-within-sign, which is sensitive to birth time. Accuracy of an hour or better is ideal.
The Seven Chara Karakas
Soul purpose · core dharma
Atma Karaka
The planet that travelled farthest into its sign at your birth - the soul-signature of this lifetime, the unfinished work the atman has come to complete.
Career · counsel · how you serve the world
Amatya Karaka
The second-rank planet - the minister to the soul-king, the way your dharma actually meets the marketplace.
Siblings · courage · initiative
Bhratri Karaka
The third-rank planet - the indicator of the courage you draw on, your siblings and peers, and your willingness to take the first step.
Mother · nurturing · emotional foundations
Matri Karaka
The fourth-rank planet - the indicator of the mother, the inner mother, your sense of safety, and the emotional ground under your feet.
Children · creativity · wisdom transmission
Putra Karaka
The fifth-rank planet - the indicator of your children (biological or chosen), the creative life that flows from you, and the wisdom you transmit forward.
Conflict · obstacles · spiritual transformation
Gnati Karaka
The sixth-rank planet - the indicator of obstacles, enemies, illness, debt, and the alchemical heat that transforms the soul.
Spouse · partnership · what you seek in the other
Dara Karaka
The seventh-rank planet - the indicator of the spouse, the texture of long partnership, and the unconscious template you bring to intimate union.
The 7 Jaimini Karakas
Each Karaka office is assigned by planetary degree-within-sign, not by the planet's fixed nature.

What is Jaimini Karaka?
Jaimini astrology is a parallel system within Vedic astrology, attributed to the sage Jaimini. Its most distinctive feature is the Chara Karaka system: seven planetary significators whose role is determined not by the planet's nature but by its current degree in the birth chart. The planet that has traveled furthest in its sign becomes the Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul's deepest purpose in this lifetime. Each successive planet by degree takes the next Karaka position. This degree-based ranking means your Karakas are unique to your exact birth moment, making Jaimini a highly personalized system. The Atmakaraka is considered the most important planet in the chart for understanding karmic evolution and the soul's intended path.
How Jaimini Karakas Are Ranked
Each planet's degree within its sign is measured from 0 to 30. The planet with the highest degree becomes Atmakaraka; the next becomes Amatyakaraka, and so on down to Darakaraka. Rahu uses reverse counting: if Rahu is at 17 degrees, it is treated as 30 minus 17 = 13 degrees for ranking. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are ranked. Outer planets are excluded in traditional Jaimini.
Worked example: Sun at 28 degrees 14 minutes = Atmakaraka. Venus at 25 degrees 03 minutes = Amatyakaraka. Mars at 22 degrees 07 minutes = Bhratrikaraka. Jupiter at 18 degrees 50 minutes = Matrikaraka. Moon at 15 degrees 32 minutes = Putrakaraka. Saturn at 11 degrees 20 minutes = Gnatikaraka. Mercury at 9 degrees 45 minutes = Darakaraka.
Frequently asked questions
What if two planets have the same degree?
Ties are broken by minutes and seconds of arc. A planet at 15 degrees 32 minutes ranks above one at 15 degrees 17 minutes. Exact ties are extremely rare and handled by comparing arc-seconds.
Is Atmakaraka the same as the Lagna lord?
No. The Lagna lord is determined by the rising sign at birth. The Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in any sign. They are often different planets with different analytical roles.
Why is Rahu's degree counted in reverse?
Rahu moves retrograde by nature. Jaimini accounts for this by measuring how far Rahu has traveled within its sign from the end (30 degrees) rather than the beginning. This reflects its backward motion.
What does a strong Atmakaraka indicate?
A well-placed Atmakaraka, in its own sign, exalted, or aspected by benefics, suggests meaningful progress on the soul’s intended path. A challenged Atmakaraka points to karmic lessons that must be worked through consciously.
