The eight Kua numbers and their two energy groups

What is a Kua Number?
The Kua number is a core concept in the Eight Mansions school of Feng Shui, known in Chinese as Ba Zhai. It is calculated from your birth year and gender and determines your personal energy group - either East or West. Each group has four auspicious directions that support your health, wealth, relationships, and personal growth, and four directions that create friction or loss.
The system was developed during the Tang Dynasty and refined through centuries of Chinese metaphysical practice. Unlike Western astrology which works with planets and signs, Ba Zhai works with directional energy - the idea that aligning your body, sleep direction, and work orientation with your favorable directions channels beneficial qi. The Kua number is the key to unlocking those directions for your specific energy type.
How Your Kua Number is Calculated
For males born before 2000: add the last two digits of your birth year to a single digit, then subtract from 10. For males born in 2000 or later: subtract from 9 instead.
For females born before 2000: add the last two digits to a single digit, then add 5. For females born in 2000 or later: add 6 instead.
If the result is 5, males use 2 and females use 8.
Worked example: Male born 1985
- Last two digits: 8 + 5 = 13, then 1 + 3 = 4.
- 10 minus 4 = Kua 6.
- East or West group is determined by the number: 1, 3, 4, 9 = East group. 2, 6, 7, 8 = West group.
Frequently asked questions
What are the auspicious directions used for?
Each of your four auspicious directions supports a different aspect of life. Face your Sheng Chi direction when working or negotiating for wealth and success. Sleep with your head pointing toward your Tien Yi direction for health. Use your Nien Yen direction for relationship harmony. Your Fu Wei direction supports personal development and clarity of mind.
Can East and West group people live together?
Yes, but it requires thoughtful arrangement. In a shared space, compromise is necessary - common areas can be arranged to benefit the primary earner or the person whose health is more fragile. Bedrooms can be individually oriented. Many Feng Shui practitioners suggest the master bedroom be oriented for the breadwinner's Tien Yi or Nien Yen direction.
Is Kua number the same as a Chinese zodiac sign?
No. The Chinese zodiac (Sheng Xiao) is based on your birth year and cycles through 12 animals. The Kua number is from a completely different system (Eight Mansions Feng Shui) and uses a different calculation. They can be used together but they answer different questions.
Does Kua number change?
No. Your Kua number is fixed from your birth year and gender and does not change. However, the annual flying star chart changes each year, which means certain areas of your home may be more or less activated depending on the year - this is a separate layer of Feng Shui analysis.
