Moon Phase at Birth
The phase of the Moon at your birth shapes your emotional nature, your instinctive responses, and the quality of your inner life. Enter your date of birth to discover which of the eight lunar phases you were born under.
Phase boundaries are sub-day (e.g. New Moon to Waxing Crescent at ~1.85 days into the cycle), so the time of birth can change your result near a transition. Enter the time exactly as it appeared on the local clock at your birth location.
We use this to apply the correct timezone (including historical DST) so the phase is anchored to your birth instant, not your current location.
The 8 Moon Phases

What is Moon Phase at Birth?
The moon completes one full cycle from new to full and back in approximately 29.5 days. The phase of the moon at the exact moment of your birth is considered in both Western astrology and Vedic Jyotish to carry psychological significance. In Western tradition, the birth moon phase shapes personality, emotional patterns, and the relationship between conscious intention (Sun) and instinctive response (Moon). In Vedic astrology, the Tithi, the lunar day, is one of the five limbs of Panchang and is used to assess the strength and quality of the moon in the birth chart. A person born on a full moon (Purnima) has a powerful, illuminated moon. A person born on a new moon (Amavasya) carries a more introspective, seed-like lunar energy. This calculator determines your birth moon phase using astronomical algorithms and interprets it through both lenses.
How Birth Moon Phase is Calculated
The moon's phase is determined by the angular separation between the Sun and Moon at the moment of birth. This angle, called the elongation, is divided into 8 sectors of 45 degrees each. New Moon = 0-45 degrees separation. Waxing Crescent = 45-90 degrees. First Quarter = 90-135 degrees. Waxing Gibbous = 135-180 degrees. Full Moon = 180-225 degrees. Waning Gibbous = 225-270 degrees. Last Quarter = 270-315 degrees. Waning Crescent = 315-360 degrees. Solar and lunar longitudes are calculated using the Julian date of the birth moment.
Worked example: Born on 15 January 1990 at 14:30. Julian date = 2447907.104. Calculated Sun longitude = 295.2 degrees. Moon longitude = 115.8 degrees. Elongation = 115.8 minus 295.2 = -179.4, normalised to 180.6 degrees. This falls in the Full Moon sector (180-225 degrees).
Frequently asked questions
Does birth moon phase affect personality?
Many astrologers, both Western and Vedic, consider the moon’s phase and sign at birth to be among the most psychologically significant chart factors. The moon governs instinct, emotional memory, and the subconscious. Its phase at birth shapes how these inner qualities are expressed, whether brightly (full moon) or quietly (new moon).
What is the difference between moon phase and moon sign?
Moon sign (Rashi) is which of the 12 zodiac signs the moon occupied at birth, determined by the moon’s longitude. Moon phase is the relationship between the moon and the sun; it changes every 3-4 days and is independent of sign. Both are used in astrology but answer different questions.
What is a Tithi in Vedic astrology?
A Tithi is a lunar day, one of 30 divisions of the moon’s monthly cycle in Vedic Panchang. Each Tithi spans 12 degrees of elongation between Sun and Moon. The moon phase as calculated here maps approximately to Tithis: New Moon = Amavasya (Tithi 30), Full Moon = Purnima (Tithi 15).
Is the full moon the most powerful birth phase?
Different traditions value different phases. In Vedic astrology, a full moon (Purnima) birth gives the moon maximum strength (Paksha Bala). In psychological astrology, new moon births are associated with strong internal focus and creative potential. Neither is superior; each carries its own gifts and challenges.

The Eight Phases of the Moon
The Moon's 29.5-day synodic cycle is divided into eight distinct phases, each carrying a distinct quality of energy. The New Moon marks the beginning of the cycle; the Full Moon its peak; and the returning crescent its completion. Each phase represents a different relationship between the Moon's light and shadow - between what is visible and what is hidden, what is growing and what is releasing.
This calculator uses the position of the Moon relative to a known reference point (the New Moon of January 6, 2000) to determine the phase on any given date. Results are accurate to within approximately one phase boundary for most dates between 1900 and 2100.
