Death
Major Arcana · XIII
Upright Meaning
The Death card almost never refers to physical death — it is the card of transformation through ending. Something in your life is completing: a chapter, a relationship, a way of being, an identity. The skeleton rides not to destroy but to clear — to make space for what cannot arrive until the old form releases. The fear this card evokes is the fear of the unknown that follows all genuine endings. The invitation is to release with grace.
Reversed Meaning
The reversed Death card often signals resistance to a necessary transformation — clinging to something that has genuinely run its course, which prolongs the ending and delays what wants to begin. The inner transformation that the outer change represents may also be happening but remaining unacknowledged.
Guidance
“What are you being asked to release? Not what you think you should release, but what life is actually showing you is complete. Honor the ending. Clear the ground.”
