The Hierophant
Major Arcana · V
Upright Meaning
The Hierophant is the keeper of tradition — the one who holds and transmits the accumulated wisdom of a lineage. He asks you to consider what received wisdom, established systems, or traditional approaches might actually serve you right now, even if they feel old-fashioned. Not all tradition is constraint; some of it is tested knowledge that shortcuts years of unnecessary experimentation.
Reversed Meaning
The reversed Hierophant invites you to question the authority of received wisdom — to examine whether the traditions, institutions, or belief systems you have inherited are genuinely serving you or simply limiting you. Personal spiritual authority is valid.
Guidance
“Consider what you have inherited — in tradition, in belief, in approach. Some of it is wisdom worth keeping. Some of it may be ready to be released. The discernment between the two is the work.”
