The three biorhythm cycles, each beginning at zero on the day of birth

What is biorhythm tracking?

Biorhythm theory proposes that three fixed cycles run continuously from the day you are born and shape how you function day to day. The physical cycle lasts 23 days and is linked to energy, strength, and coordination. The emotional cycle lasts 28 days and is linked to mood, sensitivity, and creativity. The intellectual cycle lasts 33 days and is linked to focus, memory, and reasoning.

Each cycle is drawn as a smooth wave that starts at zero on your birthday, rises to a high, falls back through zero, drops to a low, and repeats. Days near the top of a wave are seen as the stronger phase for that domain, days near the bottom as the recharging phase, and the zero crossings as the unsettled transition points.

The idea began with Wilhelm Fliess, a Berlin physician working in the late nineteenth century, who suggested that life followed regular periodic patterns. It was extended by later writers, including the proposal of the intellectual cycle, and reached wide popular attention in the 1970s through books, calculators, and even workplace scheduling experiments.

It is important to be plain about the evidence. Controlled studies have not found a reliable link between predicted biorhythm phases and real performance, accidents, or health beyond chance. Mainstream chronobiology does not support the theory. We present it here as a reflective and historical tool, a structured way to notice your own patterns over time, not as a predictive science.

How the calculation works

The calculation is purely mathematical and identical for everyone. It counts the whole number of days between your date of birth and the chosen date, then evaluates a sine wave for each cycle. The output for every cycle ranges from -100 percent at the trough, through 0 percent on a critical day, to +100 percent at the peak.

value = sin( 2 x pi x daysSinceBirth / cycleLength )

The cycle lengths are fixed: 23 days for physical, 28 for emotional, and 33 for intellectual. Only the day count changes, which is why two people born on the same date share identical curves.

Worked example: 10,000 days after birth

  • Physical: sin(2 x pi x 10000 / 23) = sin(2 x pi x 21.74...) -> about +0.99 (near a high)
  • Emotional: sin(2 x pi x 10000 / 28) = sin(2 x pi x 14.29...) -> about +0.78 (rising)
  • Intellectual: sin(2 x pi x 10000 / 33) = sin(2 x pi x 303.03...) -> about +0.17 (near neutral)
  • Reading: a strong physical day, a positive emotional day, a roughly neutral intellectual day

Frequently asked questions

Is biorhythm theory scientifically proven?

No. Multiple controlled studies have looked for a connection between predicted biorhythm phases and real outcomes such as accidents, athletic performance, and mood, and have not found an effect beyond chance. The theory is not accepted by mainstream chronobiology or medicine. It is best used as a reflective framework for noticing your own patterns rather than as a predictive system.

What are critical days?

A critical day is any day when a cycle crosses the zero line, moving from its positive phase into its negative phase or back again. In traditional biorhythm practice these transition days are considered the most unstable for that domain. A day when two or three cycles cross zero together is sometimes called a double or triple critical day and is treated as especially significant, though again this is interpretive rather than measured.

How should I use biorhythm information?

Treat the chart as a journaling prompt, not a forecast. If your physical cycle is low, you might plan lighter training and more recovery; if your intellectual cycle is in a trough, you might double-check important analytical work; if your emotional cycle is crossing zero, you might extend a little extra patience to yourself and others. The value is in the habit of self-observation, not in the numbers predicting your day.

Cycles are easier to read when your rest is consistent. The Sleep Cycle Calculator anchors your bedtime to the 90-minute sleep cycle, the Life Path Number Calculator reads the deeper numerological pattern in your birth date, and the Personal Year Calculator shows the broader yearly theme your daily rhythms move within.
