About the Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra is the energy center of authentic expression — the bridge between what you know inwardly and what you say outwardly. Located at the throat, Vishuddha governs voice, listening, truth-telling, and the courage to be heard. When balanced, you say what you mean simply and listen with the same care, and disagreement does not destabilize you; when blocked, you either fill silence with talking that says nothing or swallow your truth into people-pleasing and chronic compliance. This is the chakra that turns inner knowing into the spoken word.

Physical Signs of Imbalance

Recurrent sore throats, laryngitis, hoarseness, or losing the voice under stress
Thyroid disorders, both hyper- and hypothyroidism
Chronic neck and shoulder tension, jaw clenching, TMJ, frequent grinding at night
Dental issues, mouth ulcers, gum problems, or recurring ear infections

Emotional Signs of Imbalance

Habitual people-pleasing: saying what others want to hear instead of what you mean
Difficulty saying no, or saying yes to things you do not actually want
A felt sense that your voice does not matter, or fear of being heard
Either chronic silence or compulsive talking that fills space without saying anything

Healing Practices

  • Yoga:Matsyasana (Fish), Halasana (Plow), and Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand). Hold each for 30 to 60 seconds to open and stimulate the throat region.
  • Pranayama:Ujjayi (ocean breath). Slightly constrict the back of the throat to create a soft hissing sound on inhale and exhale, for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Meditation:visualize a deep blue sixteen-petaled lotus at the throat, opening with each inhale, with light flowing freely through it on each exhale.
  • Sound:chant the bija mantra HAM 108 times. Also try Bhramari (humming bee breath) for direct throat resonance: 5 to 10 long humming exhales with eyes and ears gently closed.
  • Lifestyle:sing daily, even briefly, with no concern for sounding good. Speak one honest sentence to one person each day, however small. Reduce the gap between what you think and what you say.
  • Diet:blueberries and blackberries, soothing liquids (warm water with lemon and honey, ginger tea, herbal teas with mullein or licorice root for the vocal cords), tree fruits, and raw honey.

Affirmations

My voice belongs to me, and what I have to say matters.

I speak my truth with clarity, and I receive others' truth with respect.

It is safe for me to be heard.

Bija Mantra · Seed Sound

HAM

Pronunciation: "hahm" (rhymes with "calm," with a soft m at the end)

Sit with a tall spine and the chin gently tucked. Chant HAM on a steady exhale, feeling the vibration resonate through the entire throat and jaw. Repeat 108 times.

When This Chakra Is Balanced

A balanced Throat speaks the truth simply and listens with the same attention. You say what you mean, and you mean what you say. Disagreement does not destabilize you. Silence is comfortable rather than awkward, and your voice carries weight because it carries no performance.
